Daniel Newton Jr.

Daniel Byron “Dan” Newton Jr., 70, of Astoria, died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, in Forest Grove.

He was born June 21, 1941, in Newberg, to Daniel B. Newton Sr. and Caroll M. (Magill) Newton.

Raised in Warrenton, he was educated there and graduated with the Class of 1959.

After a brief courtship, he married Carrie Dye Nov. 25, 1973, in Reno, Nev. She survives, residing in Astoria. The couple lived in California, Germany, Washington, D.C., and Washington state. In the early 1990s, they moved to Klamath Falls, and finally to Astoria in 2009.

Mr. Newton was an electronics specialist for the U.S. Army, and served his country for more than 30 years. He did two tours in Vietnam and was in Germany during the height of the Cold War. Following retirement from the military in 1980, he worked as a civilian for the U.S. Department of Defense for 10 years.

Family members said he enjoyed traveling, bird watching and spending time with his family. He was an avid photographer and had many photos of birds, flowers and family members. He was also a skilled handyman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Byron Newton of Oregon; four stepchildren and their spouses, Yvonne and Bob Fraser and Mike Nelson, all of Puyallup, Wash., Robert and Olga Nelson of Houston and Kari Chavez of Astoria; two sisters Dixie and Carolyn; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Jean Newton; a stepdaughter, Carol Nyberg; a grandson, Mikie Chavez; and two siblings, Tony and Robert Newton.

A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd. in Portland.
